The problem with most online PDF tools
Almost every free PDF website works the same way: you upload your file to their server, they process it there, and you download the result. That means your contract, your bank statement or your medical report sits on somebody else's computer — usually with a promise that it will be deleted in an hour. Those services then have to pay for all that computing, so they cap you at two files an hour and push a subscription.
A different approach
Modern browsers can do the work themselves. OnlinePDF ships the PDF engine to your device instead of shipping your document to a server. Your file is opened in the tab, changed in the tab, and saved from the tab.
Three things follow from that:
- It is genuinely private. Not “deleted after one hour” — never received in the first place.
- It can be free. There is no per-file server cost to recover, so there is no reason to meter you.
- It is fast on a slow connection. A 50 MB scan does not have to travel to a data centre and back.
The trade-offs, honestly
Doing everything on your device has real limits, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise. Very large files are bounded by your device's memory. Office conversions are a faithful re-flow of the content rather than a pixel-perfect copy of the original layout. OCR needs to download a language model once before it can start.
